Guide for International Students

Science Tokyo welcomes students from around the world. This guide covers essential information for international students.

Before Arrival

• Visa application — Apply for a “Student” visa at your nearest Japanese embassy or consulate
• Certificate of Eligibility (COE) — Science Tokyo will sponsor this; processing takes 1-3 months
• Housing application — Apply for international dormitories as early as possible

After Arrival

• Residence registration — Register your address at the local ward office within 14 days
• National Health Insurance — Enrollment is mandatory; premiums are income-based
• Bank account — Open a Japan Post Bank account (easier for new arrivals)
• Mobile phone — Major carriers: Docomo, SoftBank, au; MVNO options available for lower cost

Language Support

• Japanese language courses — Available at all levels through the International Student Center
• Language exchange partners — Arranged through student organizations
• English-language resources — Many administrative documents available in English

Practical Tips

1. Get a Suica/Pasmo card — For trains, buses, and convenience store purchases
2. Carry cash — Many smaller establishments do not accept cards
3. Earthquake preparedness — Familiarize yourself with evacuation routes
4. Recycling rules — Japan has strict garbage sorting rules; learn them early
